It’s bad enough playing for the worst team in your league. But knowing you are without a doubt the worst player on the worst team? That’s brutal, and it’s precisely the humiliation that Real Betis defender Paulao had to endure recently.

Heading into Sunday’s game against Rayo Vallecano, Real Betis was already in last place and facing relegation from La Liga. However, a win would keep their slim hopes of remaining in Spain’s top flight alive for another few days, and obviously that’s what they were playing for. Unfortunately, two terrible first half plays from the team’s center back led to two early goals, officially sealing their fate.

First Paulao made a terrible pass back to his keeper that got intercepted and buried in the back of the net. Then he scored an own goal while trying to deflect a Rayo Vallecano cross.

At that point he’d had enough. Though players on both teams tried to console the poor guy, he simply could not handle the guilt of relegation, so he asked—then insisted—he be removed from the game.

Then, while sitting on the bench–despite having come off to a standing ovation from the crowd—he burst into tears.

Take a look:

You just have to feel for the guy, don’t you?
