Dani Alves Eating a Banana Turns Into Awesome Anti-Racism Meme (Pics)
On Sunday, when some racist asshole threw a banana at Barcelona’s Dani Alves, the Brazilian defender had the perfect response. He picked that banana up and ate it, replenishing his potassium and using someone’s act of hatred to keep his calfs cramp-free late in a close game against Villarreal.
Since then, everyone has been talking about this simple act of defiance. And by “everyone,” I mean “probably nobody you know,” because you probably live in North America, where everybody has been preoccupied with this Donald Sterling situation.
But over in Europe and down in South America, Alves’s act of defiance is a huge deal. In fact, it’s now a bona fide social media meme.
It started with a few famous soccer players tweeting photos of themselves eating bananas in solidarity with Alves. Pretty soon thousands of people were doing the same, all of them using the hashtag #SomosTodosMacacos, which is Portuguese for #WeAreAllMonkeys.
Here is Alves’ Barcelona and Team Brazil teammate Neymar eating a banana:
Here is Brazilian legend Roberto Carlos showing his support:
Here’s Hulk…and basically his entire family:
Here’s David Luiz with Willian and Oscar:
Here’s Sergio Aguero and Marta:
And here are a bunch of non-famous people:
You gotta love a meme with a cause. Maybe some North American superstars like LeBron James (who owns a small slice of Liverpool FC) or Drake will get in on the act and connect this to the Sterling controversy to create a worldwide anti-racism campaign.
(This will probably happen now, because I’m pretty sure LeBron and Drake both read TotalProSports.com pretty regularly.)
