Donald Sterling Has Prostate Cancer
Reviled Clippers owner Donald Sterling has been battling prostate cancer for at least two years. Apparently it was so bad at one point that some people who knew about it back then thought his death was immanent.
I thought about giving this post a really snarky headline like, “NBA Cancer Donald Sterling Has Cancer.” But then I thought, no, prostate cancer really sucks. Even if Donald Sterling is a terrible human being, he’s still a human being, and recognizing and respecting humanity is what separates racists from non-racists. Why kick the man while he’s down?
Of course, the New York Post didn’t share these misgivings. So when they broke the news, they opened with a couple of witty puns and zingers.
“This could wind up being a pretty short ban,” they quipped, referring to the lifetime ban handed down by NBA commish Adam Silver this week.
Then they went on to make a basketball pun about it—because a slow and painful death is hilarious!
“Disgraced racist Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling is battling cancer—surprising those around him by beating the final buzzer for as long as he has, sources told The Post on Thursday.”
Yikes. Even the black men who work for Sterling and were most obviously insulted and hurt by his racist comments showed more sympathy than that.
“If that’s true, my thoughts and prayers are with him,” Blake Griffin told reporters. “Nobody deserves to go through something like that.”
Chris Paul expressed similar sentiments, calling the news “truly unfortunate.”
Stay classy, New York Post.
