Brutal Violence Erupts Before Coppa Italia Final in Rome (Photos + Video)
Cristiano Ronaldo Keeps Real Madrid’s Championship Hopes Alive with Ridiculous Backheel Goal in Extra Time (GIF)
On Sunday, Real Madrid squandered a golden opportunity to take command of the La Liga standings.
They entered the day in third place, two points behind Barcelona and six behind Atletico Madrid. That may not sound that great, but Real had four games left while Barcelona and Atletico only had three. Then Barcelona tied and Atletico lost, meaning a Real Madrid win over Valencia would put them in a tie for second place, just three points out of first with three winnable games to play.
Unfortunately for Real, they did not win. In fact, if not for an absolutely insane back-heel volley goal by—who else?—Cristiano Ronaldo in the 92nd minute, they would have lost and come away with zero points.
Just take a look at this:
Ronaldo may be a giant tool, but damn is he good at soccer. And this clutch goal saved any chance his team has of winning La Liga this year.
Real now sits five points behind Atletico and two behind Barcelona. They can still finish on top of the standings because they have a game in hand, but they’ll need everything else to work out just so.
