Elin Nordegren Burns Tiger Woods in College Commencement Speech (Video)
Over the last few months the friendship between Tiger Woods and his ex-wife, Elin Nordegren, has been turning heads.
First people started noticing them being cordial with one another at their children’s events. Then people started seeing Tiger’s new girlfriend, Lindsey Vonn, hanging around. Then came rumors that Elin and Lindsey were actually becoming friends, and that Tiger and Lindsey were going on double dates with Elin and her new boyfriend.
Don’t get too caught up in all the gossip media spin, though. Tiger and Elin seem to be doing a fantastic job as divorced parents, and they may even be friendly again. But Elin isn’t some doormat, and that whole “Tiger is a raging sex maniac” thing is not water under the bridge.
We know this because, this week, Elin graduated from Rollins College with a degree in psychology. And thanks to her strength of character, her perseverance in the face of adversity, and, most importantly, her outstanding 3.96 GPA, she was selected to give the commencement address.
And yeah, it was littered with references to Tiger and the situation he put her in.
There was, for example, this:
“When I received a phone call informing me about the honor of speaking today, I felt really happy. But I also was a little surprised, because I have been called a woman with no words in the media and criticized for not talking very much.” (3:16)
“When I entered my student advisor’s office in the fall of 2005, I was 25 years old, I had just recently moved to America, I was married without children. Today, nine years later, I’m a proud American, and I have two beautiful children…[pause for applause]…but I’m no longer married.” (5:23)
“And it was right after I had taken communication and the media I was unexpectedly thrust into the media limelight…and I probably should have taken more notes in that class.” (8:38)
“My psychology and law class helped me through some of the most challenging times of my life that involved legal matters. The information…offered me a place of peace in the wild storm of my personal life.” (8:52)
And, finally, this:
“I have also realized that education has been the only consistent part of my life for the last nine years, and it has offered me comfort because education is the one thing that no one can take away from you.” (9:10)
Below is a video of the entire speech. You really need to here how she delivers her remarks to get their full impact—but especially the part at 5:23, which got a huge laugh.
Quick Lindsey, get Tiger some aloe vera. Your dude just got burned.
