Johnny Manziel Texted Browns QB Coach and Said ‘Pick Me! Pick Me!’…So They Did
Well sorry, we got it all wrong. They didn’t draft Johnny Football because a homeless guy told them to. They drafted Johnny Football because Johnny Football told them to.
Apparently the Browns were very interested in Manziel but were not sure he was committed to playing football in Cleveland—because who is, really? However, according to Browns QB coach Dowell Loggains, Manziel texted him and said “Pick me! Pick me!”…or something like that.
“We’re sitting there and they keep showing Johnny on TV and we’re going back and forth, Johnny and I are texting,” he explained to radio host Bo Mattingly on Thursday. “He shoots me a text that says, ‘I wish you guys would come get me. Hurry up and draft me because I want to be there and wreck this league together.'” So Mattingly forwarded that message to owner Jimmy Haslam and, together with the previous advice he’d received from the homeless gentleman, it was enough to give the order: “Pull the trigger.”
Of course, it’s highly doubtful Johnny Football was really hoping to go to Cleveland all along. Chances are he just didn’t want to suffer the indignity of falling to the second round, and he knew the Browns were his best bet because they’re always willing to waste a premium draft pick on a QB who won’t pan out.
