USA’s Clint Dempsey Scores 32 Seconds into World Cup Opener vs. Ghana (Video)
Clint Dempsey Got Kicked in the Face in the Ghana Match, Blood Ensued (Pics + Video)
Clint Dempsey was the early American hero of the USA-Ghana match, giving the United States a one goal lead in the first minute of their World Cup opener. But that suddenly seemed like a long time ago when, at the end of the first half, Dempsey was running around the field with a bandage up his nose and blood dripping out.
Hardly a glamorous finish to the USMNT’s first half of soccer in the World Cup.
What happened, you ask? Well, Dempsey had been jockeying for a header when Ghana’s John Boye (the guy with the AWESOME hair) accidentally clipped Dempsey in the face with his foot.
How does someone who is jumping headfirst into the air from a standing position get kicked in the head? I don’t know, man. It’s soccer. Feet end up in all sorts of weird places in this sport.

Dempsey soldiered on, and in the end the effort paid off as John Brooks would score on a header in the 86th minute to give the USA a 2-1 lead—which they would hang on to for their first victory at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
