Premature Celebration: French Track A-Hole Takes Off Shirt Before Race Is Even Over, Gets Disqualified (Video)
Mahiedine Mekhissi-Benabbad is not a household name in North America because he’s French, and because steeplechase (a.k.a. that race where you have to jump over puddles) isn’t followed very closely. However, if Mekhissi-Benabbad was, say, a basketball player, I guarantee you he would be the most-hated man in sports.
A few years ago, at the European Track and Field Championships right before the 2012 Summer Olympics, this guy shoved a 14-year-old girl in a mascot costume and slapped a post-race gift out of her hand. And that was after he won.
Now Mekhissi-Benabbad has really out-douched himself. At the 2014 European Track and Field Championships this week, he once again won the 3,000m steeplechase…except in the end he didn’t, because he decided to celebrate his impending victory by taking off his shirt and carrying it in his mouth for the final 50 meters of the race. So the Spanish team lodged a formal complaint, and sure enough the IAAF disqualified him after the fact.
Take a look. It’s ridiculous:
Is there a French equivalent for the expression just desserts?
