Yesterday Was Derek Jeter Day at Yankee Stadium, and It Was Ridiculous (Video)
I have nothing against Derek Jeter. In fact, I like the guy. But yesterday the New York Yankees held a one-hour pre-game ceremony to honor the retiring shortstop on Derek Jeter Day, and it was just way over the top.
The team donned Jeter memorial patches on their caps and jerseys which will remain there the rest of the season. Every flag in the stadium was replaced with flags bearing that Jeter memorial logo. The bases had Derek Jeter Day plaques on the side of them. An airplane wrote Jeter’s hame in the sky. A giant photo of Jeter was unveiled in the Yankees’ Hall of Fame. A myriad of Yankees greats and other superstar athletes—including Michael Jordan—were there on the field. American troops stationed overseas, who risk their lives for their country, saluted Jeter. And astronauts gave him a shoutout from space.
Then there were the gifts—a G5 massage machine, the Derek Jeter memorial logo matted and framed with patched from all 14 of his All-Star Games, a 10-day Tuscan vacation, a crystal version of the Derek Jeter memorial logo, and a $222,222.22 donation to Jeter’s Turn 2 Foundation. If you didn’t know any better, you’d think the Yankees hadn’t paid the man $253,000,000 over the course of his career.
Anyway, here are the highlights of the proceedings from Derek Jeter Day, including his classy speech to the fans:
Jeter’s not dying, right? Like, the Yankees aren’t putting him down at the end of the season?
