Demarcus Cousins

DeMarcus Cousins exercised something we haven’t seen a lot of recently in sports: restraint. After receiving an elbow to the throat from Spain’s Jonas Valanciunas, DeMarcus came up swinging. Almost. He stopped himself at the proverbial 11th hour, possibly aware he was on a global stage surrounded by lots of cameras covering the FIBA World Cup Semifinal.

In DeMarcus Cousins’ defense, that elbow was unnecessarily vicious, and looked to be pretty intentional.

Take a look at the goings-on and make your own call:

Of course, both players, not just DeMarcus Cousins, play in the NBA as their day job. So the matter is by no over even though teams that meet in the semifinal normally don’t cross paths again in a tournament. When the Raptors take on the Kings, there could be a little vengeance sought by the guy who threw the elbow, and the guy who threw the punch. Almost.

Almost threw the punch. Definitely got a technical. I’m not a proponent of violence, but that sounds like a pretty raw deal for DeMarcus Cousins. I wonder if he’d do it differently knowing he would get T’d up. Probably not, because in this version of the story, he’s only got a foul against him, instead of an international crisis.
