todd gurley headbutt vs south carolina

The No. 24 South Carolina Gamecocks pulled off a huge 38-35 victory over the No. 6 Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday, saving any chance they have of escaping the brutal SEC and reaching the first ever college football playoff. So ultimately they’ve got nothing to complain about.

That being said, it might have been a hell of a lot easier to beat the Bulldogs if the referees hadn’t missed the Todd Gurley headbutt on South Carolina Linebacker Bryson Allen-Williams.

The incident occurred early in the second quarter. With South Carolina up 14-10, Gurley caught a pass for zero yards and, for some reason, decided to headbutt Allen-Williams afterward. However, the refs didn’t see it. Proving the maxim “It’s the second guy who always gets caught” to be true, the refs only saw South Carolina’s Jordan Diggs come in and headbutt Gurley in retaliation. So only Diggs got flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Take a look:

The flag on Diggs cost South Carolina 15 yards and set Georgia up for a field goal. Meanwhile Gurley, the Heisman candidate, ran for 131 yards and one touchdown. If he hadn’t gotten away with the headbutt, South Carolina could have gotten the ball back and made it 21-10, and the game might not have been so close.

Luckily, karma had it’s way in the end.
