You’d be hard pressed to find anybody on the Atlanta Falcons’ 53-man roster who had a truly bad game against the Bucs last night. They started the fourth quarter up 56-0 and wound up winning 56-14.

However, it’s pretty easy to pick the Falcons’ best player. After all, it’s not every day you see a guy break the NFL’s career return touchdowns record. And that’s exactly what Devin Hester did.

Midway through the second quarter, just seven minutes after scoring a regular rushing touchdown, Hester put the Falcons up 35-0 when he ran a Tampa Bay punt into the end zone for a 62-yard touchdown. It was his 20th career return touchdown, breaking the previous mark of 19 set by Hall of Famer Deion Sanders. And when he realized he was in the clear, Hester paid tribute to Neon Deion by high-stepping it for the final 15 yards.

That tribute to Sanders earned Hester a flag and cost the Falcons 15 yards on the ensuing kickoff. However, neither Hester nor his coaches regretted the gesture. And given the momentousness of the occasion, I bet the Bucs didn’t mind either.

Sanders certainly appreciated the thoughtfulness. And he reciprocated with a very gracious congratulatory tweet:

Pure class all around.

Congrats to Devin Hester, the greatest return specialist of all time.
