jeter's final game at yankee stadium (jeter hits walk-off single)

Last night, retiring Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter took the field for the very last time at Yankee Stadium. He still has three games left in his mythical career, but for Yankees fans this was goodbye.

Amazingly, if you had asked any one of those Yankees fans to script Derek Jeter’s final game at Yankee Stadium, it would have gone exactly like this.

Well, maybe not exactly like this. If we’re going to nitpick, I supposed one might have scripted it, “Derek Jeter Hits Walk-Off Grand Slam, Yankees Win 4-3,” or something like that. But “Jeter Hits Walk-Off Single” is pretty solid too. I doubt anyone is going to complain.

The Yankees took a 5-2 lead into the top of the ninth against the Orioles, but coughed up three runs, setting the stage for drama.

Then, in the bottom of the ninth, after a single and a sacrifice, the Captain stepped to the plate looking to play the hero one last time. And he delivered.

Here’s the final at-bat:

And here’s the post-game interview:

We can all debate whether Jeter really “deserved” a six-month retirement tour. The fact is, he’s been the favorite of Yankees fans for almost two decades, and any fan of baseball can appreciate how awesome it would be for your favorite player to go out like this. It’s pretty awesome.
