Aaron Rodgers Smoking Signal Is a Tribute to Jay Cutler, Says Aaron Rodgers (GIF)
Any respectable Packers fan has probably noticed the Aaron Rodgers smoking signal at some point over the last two years. It’s one of the various hand signals the All Pro QB uses to call plays while running the no-huddle offense, and it looks like he’s taking a puff on an imaginary joint. But nobody knows what it really means.
Well, on this week’s episode of “Tuesdays with Aaron,” which is hosted by Jason Wilde on ESPN Milwaukee, a few listeners sent in questions asking the Packers quarterback to shed light on it. And Rodgers came up with a pretty classic response.
Here’s a transcript of the segment:
Jason Wilde: Jeremy asks, “What is that pre-snap signal where you look like you’re smoking? Is that a smoke route or is that an indicator of two HIGH safeties?” Tony asks, “How do you keep from laughing after some of the hand gestures you do in the no huddle? They have been, shall we say, interesting.”
Aaron Rodgers: That was just a tribute to Jay Cutler. Because there’s that Smoking Jay Website. So I was just doing a tribute to Jay there.
JW: OK. You would never give away the actual value of those.
AR: That’s what it was!
JW: It really was?
AR: I don’t know I don’t remember.
JW: I think you’re making that up.
AR: I don’t remember.
JW: You’ve done it a lot of times, though. There are people who use it as their Twitter avatar.
AR: It’s a dummy signal. That’s the whole thing. It’s you know, like, smoking dope. You’re a dummy if you smoke dope. That’s what it’s a dummy signal.
JW: God you think well on your feet.
Obviously, while Aaron and Jay are good friends, there’s no way the Aaron Rodgers smoking signal is just a tribute to Smoking Jay Cutler. But damn that is a fantastic answer. And then the bit about being a dummy if you smoke dope? Jason Wilde is right. Aaron Rodgers does think well on his feet.
Come to think of it, that may have something to do with why he is such a good quarterback.
