Unlikely Hockey Fight: Watch Mats Zuccarello and T.J. Oshie Drop the Gloves (Video)
The St. Louis Blues may have lost their season-opener against the New York Rangers last night by a score of 3-2. But there’s no shame in that. The Rangers were Stanley Cup finalists last year. And more importantly, the Blues did win an extremely unlikely hockey fight between Mats Zuccarello and American shootout hero T.J. Oshie.
Why was it unlikely? Both are pretty scrappy players, but neither of them would ever be confused for a goon. Coming into the game, Oshie, listed at 5’11” and 189 pounds, had all of two fights on his NHL résumé. The last time he had fought anybody was against the San Jose Sharks two seasons ago on February 19, 2013. Meanwhile Zuccarello, listed at 5’7″ and 179 pounds, had zero fights on his résumé. He was a hockey fight virgin, and T.J. Oshie deflowered him.
So who won? The guy with more experience, obviously.
Take a look:
That was pretty entertaining for an extremely unlikely hockey fight, don’t you think?
Of course, that’s probably it for both of them in the fighting department this year. But for now, at least, they’re both tied with about 10 other guys on top of the “fighting majors” leader board. And Zuccarello actually leads the entire NHL with 9 penalty minutes.
