Mario Balotelli Apologizes For Racist Instagram Post (Pics)
Italian soccer star Mario Balotelli wasn’t on social media for a long time. Most observers thought that was probably for the best, given Balotelli’s rash personality and the fact that it’s extremely easy to cause controversy on Instagram and Twitter.
Of course, Balotelli eventually did join Twitter, then Instagram. And now, he’s finally stuck his cyber foot in his virtual mouth.
The other day, he posted this to Instagram:
Needless to say, there are a lot of people who didn’t like this. Some said it was in bad taste, while others said it was downright racist.
Interestingly, the English Football Association doesn’t really have a problem with the generalizations about Italians, Japanese, Enlgish, Mexicans, or blacks. But they do have a problem with the generalization about jews, so they’ve launched an investigation and given the Liverpool striker until Friday to provide an official explanation for his online behavior.
He’s already tried to explain himself on Twitter, though.
( my Mom is jewish so all of u shut up please)

I apologize if I’ve offended anyone. The post was meant to be anti-racist with humour. I now understand that (…) pic.twitter.com/UlNeNlEz9M

That part about his mother being jewish is somewhat true, by the way. Mario was taken away from his Ghanian biological parents as a young boy and put into foster care. And his foster mother, Silvia Balotelli—whom Mario does consider to be his mother—is Jewish. In fact, her parents were Holocaust survivors.
Still, Mario of all people should know to be more sensitive about issues of race. He’s been the subject of racial slurs on numerous occasions, and I doubt it felt good.
