Bruce Arians on Illegal Challenge Flag: “It Fell Out of My Pocket” (Video)
Bruce Arians is doing a tremendous job with the Arizona Cardinals. Under him, the team has won 10 games in back-to-back seasons for the first time since the 1970s. And this year he’s done it under very trying circumstances—without team leader Darnell Dockett all season, and without starting QB Carson Palmer since Week 11.
Needless to say, you don’t keep your team humming along under those circumstances without being crafty. And last night against the Rams on Thursday night football, Arians showed just how crafty he is while trying to get out of a sticky situation.
In the third quarter, with Arizona up 9-3 (yeah, it was a boring game), Drew Stanton threw a pass to Larry Fitzgerland that was intercepted by Jenoris Jenkins. However, it was questionable whether Jenkens had actually made the catch, so Arians threw a red challenge flag.
The problem? You can’t challenge a turnover. They are all automatically reviewed now, so if you throw that flag, you lose a timeout. Woops.
So what did Bruce Arians do? He tried to have one of his players pick the thing up before the refs saw it, but he was too late. Then he tried something else:
“Flag? What flag? Oh, this flag? No, I didn’t throw this flag. It just fell out of my pocket. I can see why you would think that I threw the flag, but I clearly did not.”
The refs didn’t buy Arians’s excuse and charged the Cardinals with a timeout. But you have to respect the man for trying.
