Penguins Analyst Makes Terrible ‘I Can’t Breathe’ Joke On-Air (Video)

Penguins analyst

A Penguins analyst made a very off-color joke about the Eric Garner case in response to athletes wearing the ubiquitous “I Can’t Breathe” shirts. I would say that the joke was “too soon,” but I don’t know if there will ever come a time in which sports announcers should draw from ANY public issues for humor—certainly not one as polarizing and tragic as a man getting crushed on camera by police.

The joke that Penguins analyst Stan Savran made was such a dumb attempt at non-humor that I’m not even going to write it down. It was pretty offensive, made VERY offensive by how unfunny it was.

Take a look at the dumb comment, and the cringing reaction from co-host Jay Caufield, who knows better than to do what Savran did:

…AND…the obligatory Twitter apology:

People, especially those on the air who need to ad-lib and fill time while entertaining, are susceptible to saying really dumb stuff without malice. This appears to be one such time. Hopefully, he’ll think twice before treading into these waters again.
