Blown Roughing the Passer Call Helped Lift Seahawks Over 49ers (Video and Tweets)
Yesterday, the Seahawks bested the 49ers thanks in part to a questionable roughing the passer call that allowed Russell Wilson and the Seattle offense to keep their drive alive. The call ultimately kept the Seahawks moving and allowed Russell Wilson to knock in a TD pass two plays later, giving Seattle a 17-7 lead in the fourth quarter of a very close, slow-moving game.
But let’s back up.
On a 3rd and 5 on the Niners’ 15, Wilson got a pass off and was (very quickly) hit by linebacker Nick Moody. That’s when the roughing the passer call was made. A would-be field goal attempt turned into a first down, the Hawks scored, and a potential six point lead became ten, effectively sealing the game for them in this NFC West showdown.
Here’s the hit:
I think it’s no exaggeration to say that the Twitter reaction was far more explosive than the hit.
Terrible call! Omg! That wasn’t roughing passer. — DARNELL DOCKETT (@ddockett) December 14, 2014
Touching the QB. 15 yards.

And a former 49er weighed in as well:
Oh ok. I get it tho. Dont hit the QB! One of the BEST scrambling QBs in the game! Best at breakin tkls! Best at extended plays! Cant hit him — Eric Wright (@EWrighteous21) December 14, 2014
Welcome to the new NFL.
