Headbutting your opponent is illegal in—wait, let me check—yep, pretty much every single sport there is. So, theoretically, headbutt GIFs should be scarce.
They are not scarce, though. Despite the fact that headbutts almost always result in ejections, fines, and suspensions, they still happen every once in a while when players lose their cool or suspect the referee isn’t watching. So today, with the topic in the news again this week thanks to Kevin Garnett, we present you with this list of headbutt GIFs as a kind of headbutt retrospective.
Take a look. See if your favorite sports headbutt made the list.
We might as well start with the most recent headbutt. This little maneuver earned Kevin Garnett a one-game suspension—though he and most NBA fans probably thought it was worth it. Dwight Howard is a tool.
25. KG Headbutts Dwight
Of course, the incident with Dwight Howard wasn't the first time KG used his head as a weapon. He's usually more subtle about it, though, as he is here with Joakim Noah.
24. KG Headbutts Noah
Helmet on face headbutting? Not cool, Erik Walden. Not cool.
23. Erik Walden Headbutts Delanie Walker
Studebaker probably had whiplash after this, but at least he had his helmet on.
22. Virgil Green Headbutts Andy Studabaker
You headbutt a Gamecock, a Gamecock will headbutt you right back. Todd Gurley learned that lesson the hard way this year.
21. Todd Gurley Headbutts Gamecocks
Hey, remember that time during the 2014 FIFA World Cup when a Cameroonian guy headbutted his own teammate? Yeah, that was nuts.
20. Cameroon Players Headbutt Each Other
Here's another case of helmet-t0-face headbutting. Only this time the guy without the helmet is the agressor. Which is insane.
Seriously, check out the look on Kaepernick's face after Alex Boone headbutts him. He is quite obviously afraid, as he should be.
19. Alex Boone Headbutts Colin Kaepernick
Costa got away with this one, not that getting sent off would have mattered much. The Netherlands wound up destroying Spain by a score of 5-1.
18. Diego Costa Headbutts Bruno Martins Indi
That was definitely a flop from Jamal Adams. Still, Ole Miss QB Bo Wallace brought the unsportsmanlike conduct flag upon himself by lunging toward him helmet-first.
17. Bo Wallace Headbutts Jamal Adams
Michael Morse had a rather unique way of celebrating his hits with Giants first base coach Roberto Kelly. Now that Morse is on the Marlins, I wonder if his new first base coach Perry Hill will be willing to carry on the tradition.
16. Michael Morse's Celebratory Headbutt
This might be the dumbest red card of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. I mean, it's not like Pepe could claim he accidentally bumped noggins with Mueller. He had to bend halfway over just to reach him!
15. Pepe Headbutts Thomas Mueller
Jim Harbaugh headbutts his kids for good luck, huh? Sounds about right.
14. Jim Harbaugh Headbutts His Kids
This is one of the most subtle headbutts in our little retrospective. Roman Zozulya of Ukrainian side Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk lowers his head, takes aim, and lets Jan Vertonghen of Tottenham just walk right into him.
Amazingly, the refs actually caught this and gave Zozulya a much-deserved red card.
13. Roman Zozulya Headbutts Jan Vertonghen
If the previous headbutt was the most subtle on the list, this one is the weirdest. Nene goes in for the headbutt, then their heads just stick together like they have magnets in them.
12. Nene Headbutts Jimmy Butler
And if that last one was the weirdest, this one has to be the funniest.
Nice try, guys.
11. The Double Headbutt Flop
You don't see headbutts that often in hockey. There's really no need since guys are basically allowed to just drop their gloves and punch each other in the face any time they want. However, every once in a while...
10. Derek Dorsett Headbutts Mike Weaver
Now that's cunning. Make like you're going in for a conciliatory hug, then whack the guy right in the orbital bone.
9. Malaysian Headbutt Sneak Attack
And speaking of cunning, how about this reverse headbutt from Belgian Mousa Dembele? I wonder who taught him that? Maybe fellow Belgian Marouane Fellaini?
8. Mousa Dembele's Reverse Headbutt
Nah, couldn't have been Fellaini. He's much more direct with his headbutts.
7. Marouane Fellaini Headbutts Ryan Shawcross
I doubt the refs missed this one. After getting knocked down, Borja Valero charged Andreas Johansson like a freaking bull.
6. Borja Valero Headbutts Andreas Johansson
It doesn't look like much, but WNBA star Candace Parker of the Los Angeles Sparks accidentally headbutted her own teammate after a crucial bucket in overtime...
5. Candace Parker Headbutt, Part 1
That teammate was Nneka Ogwumike and, as you can see, the accidental headbutt left her a bloody mess. Not surprisingly, Ogwumike missed the ensuing free throw, which in turn helped the Tulsa Shock tie the game and send it to double overtime...
4. Candace Parker Headbutt, Part 2
As you can see, Candace Parker was all torn up about it.
Luckily, Nneka Ogwumike is a competitor. She recoverd, scored six straight baskets in the second overtime, and led the Sparks to victory.
3. Candace Parker Headbutt, Part 3
Don't be fooled by that padding. Gus Frerotte injured his neck and had to leave the game.
He'll never live it down, either.
2. Gus Frerotte Headbutts...a Wall
You never doubted it, did you? You had to know the Zinedine Zidane's headbutt from the 2006 World Cup Final would take the top spot. It's one of the most insane random acts of violence in sports history.
