irish dudes sneaked into super bowl

Two Irish dudes sneaked into Super Bowl XLIX last weekend in Phoenix. Like for real. Their names are Paul McEvoy and Richard Whelan. And they are my heroes.

Here’s the story. Paul and Richard are huge Seahawks fans. (Since 2012 like the rest of them.) Last year they went to New York to see their team beat the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII, so this year they thought they’d go to Arizona to see their team beat the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLIX. They didn’t have tickets, of course, but that was okay. They’d just fork over some big bucks to a scalper like they did the year before.

Problem was, the tickets for Super Bowl XLIX were astronomically more expensive than they were for Super Bowl XLVIII, and they just couldn’t afford them. So they were faced with a conundrum: accept reality (that they flew from Dublin to Arizona to watch the game at a pub) or see if they could just walk right in.

They chose the latter, and it worked.

Here’s the story Whelan told to RTE Radio One Morning Ireland:

“Our game plan was to be super confident. We just thought if we pretend we belong there, nobody will question us. Between one layer of security and another we just walked in behind these 20 first aid workers, straight up to the front door and hid in behind them. Paul was looking at his phone, pretending to text me, as if we had just popped out to look at an email we got or something. We walked past another security guard that just wasn’t paying attention. We could see the field then, the stadium and the atmosphere was insane. I remember looking at Paul’s face, we just couldn’t believe we got in.”

Amazing, right? Well, there’s more.

After wandering around like nomads for the first half, they ran into a guy who said the girls sitting next to him were in the halftime show and would be gone after that. So Whelan and McEvoy went and sat in those seats. Which were in the fourth row. And cost $25,000 a piece. And were right next to former Patriots and Seahawks safety Lawyer Milloy.

Of course, Whelan and McEvoy knew nobody would believe what they did if they didn’t take pics. So they took pics. And they posted them on Twitter and Instagram.
