Chris Paul Rips Female Ref After Clippers Loss to Cavs (Video)
The Los Angeles Clippers had a horrendous night on Thursday, as they accumulated a total of five technical fouls during an uninspiring 105-94 loss to the red-hot Cavs in Cleveland. One of those technical fouls was on Chris Paul, and it was called by rookie referee Lauren Holtkamp, who is in her first year as an NBA referee after being brought up from the D-League.
So what does Paul think of her work thus far? Here’s what he had to say about his tech and Lauren’s job after the game:
“I think we have to show better composure, but at the same time some of [the technical fouls] were ridiculous,” Paul said. “The tech that I get right there was ridiculous. I don’t care what nobody says, I don’t care what she says; that’s terrible. There’s no way that can be a tech. We try to get the ball out fast every time down the court, and when we did that, she said, ‘Uh-uh.’ I said, ‘Why, uh-uh?’ And she gave me a tech. That’s ridiculous. If that’s the case, this might not be for her.”
And here’s video of Paul saying those exact words to reporters after the loss to the Cavs:
So what exactly happened on the play that earned Chris Paul his technical and Lauren Holtkamp some harsh criticism from the all-star point guard? You can watch all five technical fouls called against the Clippers in the video below. Paul’s comes at around the 0:54 mark:
Does Chris Paul have a point? Somewhat. I mean, five technicals is a lot for one team in a single game. And if it was a male ref that Paul was questioning, we probably wouldn’t even be talking about this.
However, I also doubt Paul would have questioned whether or not officiating is the right job for Lauren in the first place had she been a male referee. And she didn’t call all five technical fouls on her own. So as much as Paul would like to vent about his team’s disastrous night in Ohio, he may want to find a different target for his excuses, because this one only seems to be earning him some harsh public backlash.
