Jerry Rice Admits to Using Stickum After Blasting Patriots For ‘Cheating’ (Video)
Before going into Jerry Rice‘s recent admission, let’s quickly revisit a conversation the Hall of Fame wide receiver had with Jim Rome back on January 22nd. During their discussion on the Patriots and DeflateGate, Rice made it clear that he felt the Patriots were cheaters, going so far as to suggest their latest Super Bowl victory will have an asterisk beside it.
Here’s a look at some of his comments, via JimRome.com:
“I’m going to be point blank, I feel like it’s cheating,” Rice told The Jim Rome Show. “Because you have an edge up on your opponent and its unfortunate that it happened. I’m not saying the outcome of the game would have been different or anything like that because they got beat 45-7, but they still had an edge…
“I think it’s a great achievement to get to the Super Bowl so many times and to be so close to winning,” said Rice. “But if they win this Super Bowl, I feel like there’s going to be an asterisk put on it. When people think about the New England Patriots they’re going to think about Spygate and those under inflated footballs and I think a lot of the players they’re going to be tide to that.”
Those are the words that came straight from the mouth of Jerry Rice, and they seem awfully hypocritical in light of our recent revelations that Rice used stickum.
During a recent interview with ESPN for a segment on the evolution of gloves (watch it here), the NFL’s all-time leader in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns admitted that he would apply an illegal sticky spray to his gloves in order to give them added grip. His exact words were as follows:
“I know this might be a little illegal, guys, but you put a little spray, a little stickum on them, to make sure that texture is a little sticky,”
And here’s the footage:
So should we begin to suggest that everyone put an asterisk on each of Jerry Rice’s receiving records, as well as his three Super Bowl championships? Nah. We’ll suggest that everyone ignore what Rice has to say about the Patriots and DeflateGate.
