Potential No. 1 Pick Jameis Winston Might Not Attend NFL Draft
Jameis Winston may not attend the 2015 NFL Draft in Chicago on April 30. If he doesn’t, he could be the first No. 1 overall pick to not attend the shindig in 21 years.
Winston impressed the hell out of NFL scouts at the combine in February, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, holders of the first overall pick, are in desperate need of a franchise quarterback. But even if the Bucs elect to fill one of their many other holes with the first overall pick, the Titans, Jets, Bears, and Rams are all teams that could use a little QB depth. So it’s very unlikely Winston would go any lower than No. 10, even with Marcus Mariotta also on the board.
Nevertheless, according to Antonor Winston, his son Jameis would prefer to spend draft day with family and friends in Alabama. Or at least, that’s how he feels right now. Antonor also said the decision “was not set in stone.” Jameis could change his mind, which is to say there is still a chance he might convince his handlers that he won’t do anything incredibly stupid in the Windy City.
So who was the last No. 1 overall pick not to attend the NFL draft? That would be Ohio State’s Dan “Big Daddy” Wilkinson back in 1994.
Wilkinson turned out to be a pretty big bust, in case you were wondering. Maybe Cincinnati should have taken Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk?
