Russian Keeper Igor Akinfeev Struck By Flare, Taken to Hospital (Video)
An ugly scene unfolded during today’s European Championship qualifying match between Russia and Montenegro in Podgorica , when play had to be suspended in the first minute after Russian keeper Igor Akinfeev was struck in the back of the head by a flare.
The culprit was one of the home team’s supporters and reports indicate that police were able to track down the Montenegro fan and arrest him shortly after.
As for Akinfeev, he was stretchered off the pitch and taken to a local hospital where he is said to be conscious.
Here’s a look at the incident that forced Akinfeev to exit the game:
Play resumed after a 35 minute delay and fans were warned that any other incidents would result in an abandoned match and a Russian victory—although I’m sure Russia will protest the outcome if they fail to emerge victorious (currently 0-0 at the half).
