Jon Jones Stripped of UFC Title, Suspended Indefinitely
On Monday, UFC light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones was arrested on a felony charge for leaving the scene of an accident after his rental SUV struck the car of a pregnant woman in Missouri.
One day later, the UFC came down hard on Jones, as he was stripped of his title and suspended indefinitely. It was the first time in UFC history that a champion had to be stripped of his title due to disciplinary reasons.
It was not an easy decision for the UFC to make, but it was one that needed to be made according to UFC president Dana White, who had the following to say about the incident on “Fox Sports Live”:
“He’s disappointed, but it is what it is. It is the decision we had to make.
“For us to go in and have to strip him of his title and suspend him is not fun, but you know what they say: The show must go on.”
As a result of the suspension, Jones has been pulled from his title fight against Anthony Johnson at UFC 187. Daniel Cormier will take his place in the main event at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Initial reports of the accident claimed that the 25-year-old woman in the other vehicle was not injured and Jones would only be charged with a misdemeanor, but after it was revealed that she had in fact suffered a fractured arm and wrist, the charge was changed from a misdemeanor hit-and-run to a felony for leaving the scene of a crime.
Jones appeared in Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court for a felony first appearance, where he did not enter a plea. But he did have this to say on Twitter:
Got a lot of soul searching to do. Sorry to everyone I’ve let down.

Let’s hope his search is a fruitful one so that Jones may someday return to the UFC a better man.
