With Wednesday’s Orioles-White Sox game closed to the public as a result of the ongoing civil unrest in Baltimore, Orioles Park at Camden Yards was eerily quiet. Luckily, everyone involved tried to make the most of the historic but eerie and ultimately sad situation.

That included the players, who gave phantom autographs…

And threw balls to non-existent fans in empty seats…

And it also included Baltimore Orioles TV announcer Gary Thorne, who observed that the silence at Camden Yards was reminiscent of a PGA event and busted out his “Masters voice” to call Adam Jones‘s eighth inning double off the center field wall…

Thorne didn’t use his golf voice for the entire game. The fact that he happened to be doing it when Jones cracked a double off the center field wall was just a bit of good luck. And the result of this good luck was one of the most surreal and memorable calls I’ve ever heard.

Hat’s off to Gary Thorne for turning lemons into lemonade.
