Joel Ward Buzzer-Beater Gives Capitals Shocking 2-1 Win Over Rangers in Game 1 (Video)
You do not see hockey buzzer-beaters very often. But we saw one on Thursday night. A Joel Ward buzzer-beater gave the Washington Capitals a thrilling 2-1 win at Madison Square Garden and a 1-0 lead over the New York Rangers in Round 2 of the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Alex Ovechkin had given the Caps a 1-0 lead with a sick goal at the end of the first period, and the score stayed 1-0 for the next 37 minutes. However, the Rangers finally tied the game with just under five minutes remaining in the third. So it looked like the teams were heading to overtime.
Then Ovechkin struck again. After shovelling the puck into the corner of the Rangers zone with 10 seconds left, he regained possession behind the goal line after a Nicklas Backstrom check jarred it lose. Then Ovechkin darted behind the goal with two defenders chasing after him before dishing a gorgeous pass back out in front to a wide open Joel Ward who whacked it past Henrik Lunqvist.
Take a look:
Talk about a stunner. Another two seconds and the game goes to sudden death overtime. Rangers fans and players alike must have felt like they had the wind knocked out of them.
You gotta love playoff hockey.
