Tony Allen Invents New Mike Conley Nickname After Stellar Game 2 Performance: Say Hello to One-Eyed Charlie (Video)
Memphis Grizzlies guard Mike Conley had surgery to repair multiple facial fractures just eight days ago. As a result, he had to sit out Game 1 of his team’s second round series against MVP Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors.
However, watching his team flounder and lose was too much for Conley to bear.
“My wife, my mom, and my dad, they wanted me to take the extra days off. And I’m sure the training staff did, too,” Conley explained. “But I wanted to be out there. I had to tell my mom and dad, ‘No. I’m playing regardless.'”
The result of that determination and disregard for his own physical well-being? A gritty playoff performance in which Conley played 27 minutes and scored a game-high 22 points.
Also, a textbook 97-90 Grizzlies win.
Seriously, that’s the stuff legends of made of. And it’s also the stuff great nicknames are made of, so teammate Tony Allen tried out several after the game, including “One-Eyed Bandit” and “Masked Assassin.”
However, the nickname Allen gave Conley during the game was probably the best:
It’s official. From now on, I’m calling Mike Conley “One-Eyed Charlie.”
