Astros OF Jake Marisnick Records Rare Unassisted Double Play (Video)

Double plays are normally tense affairs that involve a race between the runner and the ball to first base. When you factor in an outfielder, that play becomes even more high-wire with a long throw. However, an unassisted double play from an outfielder is so rare that we don’t really have any expectations, because it happens so infrequently.

Astros outfielder Jake Marisnick went for a jog to complete his double play as he caught a low fly ball off the bat of Matt Joyce, then ran to first as Albert Pujols forgot there was only one outĀ and had already rounded second. So time was on the side of Jake Marisnick, who made this look pretty easy. Defense gets pretty fun when the baserunners can’t remember the number of outs tallied up!

Here’s the video:

The Astros won 3-2. Because of this play? Nah, probably not. But it’s the reason we’re talking about a 3-2 baseball game in May.
