Mayweather-Pacquiao Fight Shatters PPV Records
We all knew that the highly-anticipated (and incredibly underwhelming) Mayweather-Pacquiao fight would break many of boxing’s previous revenue records, but I’m not sure anyone expected this, via a press release from HBO:
The boxing blockbuster event, Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao, shattered the previous record for total pay-per-view buys and now ranks as the highest-grossing pay-per-view of all time. Initial reports from distributors indicate that the event generated more than 4.4 million U.S. buys and more than $400 million in domestic pay-per-view revenue alone.
That’s right. The Mayweather-Pacquiao fight generated a whopping 4.4 million pay-per-view buys in the USA alone, smashing the previous record of 2.48 million buys set by Floyd Mayweather and Oscar De La Hoya back in 2007.
No word yet on how many of those 4.4 million buyers were disappointed with their purchase, but I’m sure that number broke some sort of record as well.
