Stan Wawrinka Beats Novak Djokovic, Wins French Open (Videos)
Novak Djokovic will have to wait at least one more year to complete his career Grand Slam after losing Sunday’s French Open Final to Stan Wawrinka in four sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4.
Things started off well for Djokovic, who won the first set. But after dropping the second set to his Swiss opponent, the tournament’s No. 1 seed lost his cool and things spiraled out of control from there:
Just a few sets later, Wawrinka was faced with Championship Point, and he took advantage:
Despite receiving his fair share of boos throughout the tournament (including during Sunday’s Final, after smashing his racket following his second-set loss), the fans at Roland Garros still showed Djokovic plenty of love during the trophy ceremony following the match.
As for the eighth-seeded Stan Wawrinka, this marks his first ever French Open title, and it’s just his second career Grand Slam title.
At 30-years-old, it’s tough to say that there’s plenty more to come from Wawrinka, but with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal clearly on the decline at this point in their careers, and Djokovic and Andy Murray looking like the only true threats for male tennis domination, perhaps this isn’t the last we’ve seen of Stan on the big stage.
