Women’s World Cup: Netherlands Player Swings and Misses on Breakaway (Video)
The Netherlands were tied, nil-nil, against Japan in the early minutes of Tuesday’s Round of 16 match at the Women’s World Cup when star Netherlands player Manon Malis got through on a breakaway and seemed to have a clear shot on goal from a very close distance. Unfortunately, at the moment of impact, her feet were thinking two different things. Rather than position the ball in front of her with her right foot for a shot by her left, she took a full dribble, leaving her left foot swinging at air.
Malis ended up tangled up and off balance, falling to the ground as the “shot” rolled over the end line for a goal kick.
Here’s the clip, which is almost painful to watch:
Japan ended up taking and maintaining a 1-0 lead shortly thereafter. And they would go on to win the game by a score of 2-1, booting the Netherlands out of the Women’s World Cup.
