Carli Lloyd Hat-Trick Leads USWNT to World Cup Title (Videos)
Four years after losing to Japan in the 2011 Women’s World Cup final, the USWNT got their revenge by beating the defending champs in Sunday’s final of the 2015 tournament in Canada.
It didn’t take the American women long to assert themselves either, as Carli Lloyd‘s hat-trick and another goal from Lauren Holiday put the USA up 4-0 just 16 minutes into the match.
Here’s a look at the USWNT’s fourth goal of the game, and Carli Lloyd’s third, which came from center:
Despite the early four-goal deficit, the Japanese women never gave up, scoring two goals to cut the lead in half with almost 40 minutes still remaining in the match, but just a few minutes after Japan’s second goal, the USA’s Tobin Heath did this in the 54th minute:
And with a 5-2 lead, the American’s clamped down defensively until the final whistle. And once it sounded, it was time for the USWNT to celebrate their first World Cup title since 1999:
The victory means the USA’s all-time leading goal scorer, Abby Wambach, gets the World Cup title that nearly eluded her throughout her entire international career.
As for today’s hero, Carli Lloyd, she finish the tournament with six goals, including at least one in each of her last four matches. That was enough to earn her the Golden Boot as the player of the tournament.
