Yikes This DeMarcus Cousins-George Karl Handshake Was Awkward (Video)
The Sacramento Kings are an absolute disaster right now. But chief among their many, many problems this offseason—worse than trading away young prospects like Nik Stauskas to clear cap space for free agents who refused to sign in Sacramento—has to be the relationship between star center DeMarcus Cousins and head coach George Karl. It’s…how should we put it? Biter? Acrimonious? Non-existent?
The problem started about 15 minutes after the Kings hired Karl as their coach with 30 games to go in the season. Apparently he tried to convince anybody in the organization who would listen that they needed to trade Cousins…which is insane. Karl may be a genius with the Xs and Os, but trading Cousins is a terrbile idea. He’s not only the Kings’ best player, but one of the best centers in the NBA. Last year he averaged 24 points and 12 rebounds per game, and at 24 years old he’s only just starting to come into his own.
Of course, Cousins found out that Karl wanted him gone. And like many an NBA star before him, he quoted Jay-Z lyrics to summarize his feelings on the matter.

In case you don’t speak emoji, that means “when the grass is cut, the snakes will show,” which is a line from Mr. Z’s “Blueprint 2” that players from Carmelo Anthony to Andre Iguodala have been using to describe Karl for years.
So yeah, things are icy between Karl and Cousins. In fact, many say the relationship may be totally irreparable.
That’s probably why this DeMarcus Cousins-George Karl handshake at a Summer League game on Monday was so incredibly awkward:
Avoid eye contact? Check.
Run the hell away as fast as possible? Check.
Have fun in 2015-16, Kings fans!
