Everybody knew that the main event at the 2015 ESPY Awards would be Caitlyn Jenner‘s speech after receiving the Arthur Ashe Courage Award.

That includes Google and Airbnb, who ran very touching ESPY commercials supporting acceptance and understanding of transgender people…and everyone else, too.

Take a look:

Were the ads powerful? Yes. Did Google and Airbnb mean what they said? Probably.

But let’s get one thing straight. Google and Airbnb made the ads because they knew a lot of people who support Caitlyn Jenner and LGBT issues would be tuning in to the 2015 ESPY Awards, and they wanted to make those people like them.

That doesn’t mean you can’t be moved by the ads. You should be. I’m just trying to remind you that, while Google and Airbnb seem to be very cool, ethical corporations, their bottom line is still profit, not social change. Come talk to me when they air ads like that during a NASCAR race.
