canada beats usa for baseball gold on walk-off throwing error

On Sunday night, Canada won gold in Pan Am baseball with a walkoff win over the USA in extra innings.

The box score looks incredible. Tied 4-4 after nine, Team USA took a 6-4 lead in the top of the 10th. However, Team Canada rallied to plate three in the bottom frame, winning gold in dramatic fashion on home soil.

Unfortunately, the ending wasn’t quite as cinematic as it sounds.

After Canada scored one run with a one-out single by Pete Orr, a pickoff throw by USA pitcher David Huff sailed behind the first baseman and into right field. That allowed Skyler Stromsmoe (real name) to score from second base. Then the right fielder tried to throw out Orr at third base, but the throw was high, and Orr raced home, scoring the winning run with a face-first dive.

Take a look:

I’m not trying to take anything away from the Canadians, who were deserving champions. But dammit, that’s an agonizing way to lose a championship game.

Hopefully Team USA gets its act together for the return of Olympic baseball next summer in Rio.
