A drone flying over the coast in Pismo Beach, CA, showed a few surfers riding waves and enjoying the ocean. It also showed how oblivious they were that sharks were milling about around them the whole time.

Maybe they weren’t in danger, and maybe the sharks were friendly sharks. Or maybe they were angry sharks that would have taken a bite out of them, had the opportunity arisen.

Here’s the video:

What’s perhaps most frightening here is that this might be common. We don’t often have birds-eye views of the ocean, so maybe this is just a common swimming or surfing experience, which is downright terrifying.

I know the stats about how rare shark attacks are, but if I had any sense that one was fifty yards away, I would NOT be enjoying myself in the water. I would be panic-swimming back to shore. At which point the shark would probably mistake me for a wounded seal and eat me.
