At the Rogers Cup in Montreal on Wednesday, Aussie tennis player Nick Kyrgios created a firestorm of controversy when he told Stan Wawrinka that another player “banged” his girlfriend.

The problem, of course, was not merely that the comment was crude. It was that Wawrinka’s girlfriend is 19-year-old Croatian tennis player Donna Vekic, and Kyrgios basically accused her of sleeping around on national television.

For that reason, the reaction to what was only Kyrgios’ latest on-court issue has been severe. On Thursday, the ATP levied a whopping $10,000 fine and said they had not ruled out taking further action. Then he heard it from the fans.

Listen as the crowd boos Nick Kyrgios before and after his straight sets loss to John Isner:

Nick Kyrgios issued an official apology for his remarks on Thursday:

“I would like to take this opportunity to apologise for the comments I made during the match last night vs Stan Wawrinka. My comments were made in the heat of the moment and were unacceptable on many levels. In addition to the private apology I’ve made, I would like to make a public apology as well. I take full responsibility for my actions and regret what happened.”

That’s pretty solid. He explains that it was “the heat of the moment,” but he doesn’t make excuses.

Unfortunately, Kyrgios’ family just won’t shut up.

“It’s not a nice thing to say, it’s not,” his mother told Fairfax media. “But you can’t always cop it on the chin from other people without retaliating.”

Kyrgios’ brother, Cristos, later clarified the “cop it on the chin” part on Australian radio. He said it was Wawrinka who started the feud when he accused his brother of faking an injury during a previous match.

Then Cristos went and slammed Donna Vekic worse than his brother did. In fact, his comment was so bad that the radio station cut him off before his comments made it to air—but of course Cristos later posted what he said in a now-deleted Facebook post.

“So just did a media interview for Nick,” the post said. “Said Donna obviously loved the ‘kokk.’ They cut my interview and said its the worst thing they have ever heard on air. Ah cheers.”

The Kyrgios family seems really great, huh?
