The English soccer season is just a few weeks old, but this remarkable Marco Matias goal from the English League Championship is definitely a “goal of the year” candidate.

Matias, 26, is a recent transfer from Portuguese club Vitoria Guimaraes to Sheffield Wednesday in England’s second division. And in his first four games in England, he didn’t do a whole lot to make his presence known.

That all changed on Saturday, though. About 37 minutes into Sheffield’s game against Leeds United, a perfectly timed run by Matias put him behind the defense to receive a long pass from teammate Liam Palmer. However, the defense closed in quickly, making it look like nothing much would come of it.

That’s when Matias worked his magic. He flicked the ball up over his and the defender’s heads with his right foot before striking a beautiful volley with his left that hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced into the net.

Take a look:

Pretty good, huh?

Unfortunately for Sheffield fans, as fun as that goal was to watch, if Matias scores many more like that he probably won’t remain on the team for very long. Guys with lots of potential always end up getting transferred to clubs in the top division.
