Iconic 1989 Ken Griffey Jr Rookie Card Recreated in Latest Macklemore Video
If you collected baseball cards in the late 80s or early 90s, there’s a pretty good chance you either owned or knew somebody who owned Upper Deck’s 1989 Ken Griffey Jr rookie card. It was iconic because of Junior’s happy-go-lucky grin, because everybody seemed to have one, and because the guy was just so damned good at baseball.
Of course, people who grew up in the midwest (such as myself) can wax nostalgic about this card, so you can imagine the warm fuzzies it must give people who grew up in the Seattle area. Which is probably why Seattle rapper Macklemore decided to recreate the 1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey Jr rookie card for a few frames in his latest music video.
The video is for a song called “Downtown.” And while there’s a lot to like all around, the highlight is Junior’s cameo at the 1:42 mark.
I’m not going to say anything more about it because I don’t want to spoil it. Just check it out:
That was excellent. In fact, this sort of thing needs to happen more often.
Maybe 50 Cent can recreate his own baseball card in one of his own videos?
