The torrent of bad news continues to surround FIFA and its chairman, Sepp Blatter. The Swiss attorney general has begun criminal proceedings against the soccer honcho amid countless allegations of bribery and corruption throughout the ranks of the organization.

The actual charges being brought against Blatter are criminal mismanagement and misappropriation of FIFA funds. This stems from an unofficial payment he reportedly made without the consent of the organization (a bribe), and contract tampering to make terms more favorable for FIFA.

Prosecutors have seized materials from Blatter’s office for investigation, and FIFA suddenly canceled a press conference scheduled for today, saying they’re cooperating with the investigation.

This has been in the works since allegations took a more serious turn last November, so we’ll see if the scandal will produce enough concrete evidence for these criminal charges to stick. Given the prevalence of the corruption, it seems likely.
