Metta World Peace to Donate Award Trophy for Charity

It’s almost hard to remember these days that Metta World Peace was, once, Ron Artest, the craziest player in the NBA. Sure, he’s still got a wacky name, but he seems to have mellowed out a LOT. And maybe even got more conscientious. The Lakers forward is auctioning off his 2003-04 Defensive Player of the Year trophy, and the proceeds will go to something he calls “family defense.”

Essentially, he’s trying to raise $2 million to help men become better fathers and partners. It’s a pretty noble goal, and the trophy goes up for auction on November 13th, his birthday.

This isn’t the first time he’s done something like this. In 2010, he raised over $600,000 by raffling off his Lakers championship ring. The money went to fund a charity for mental illness, something that has been near and dear to his heart throughout the back half of his career.
