I used to think the Cleveland Browns were the Chicago Cubs of football, and that Browns fans and Cubs fans were very much alike. However, it recently occurred to me that this just isn’t true.

Sure, both franchises are historically good at not winning. Sure, both fanbases have endured incredible, improbable, heartbreaking losses over the years. But despite all this, Cubs fans actually remain relatively upbeat. To them, every year might be the year, and every spring brims with hope and optimism.

Browns fans? They’re much more fatalistic. They just know the Browns are going to fail every year, no matter what. The team could acquire Aaron Rodgers, Rob Gronkowski, Marshawn Lynch, and the entire Dallas Cowboys offensive line today, and Browns fans wouldn’t be excited, because they understand that, somehow, the team will find a way to lose.

So you see, being a Browns fan isn’t about hoping for victories. It’s about accepting losses. Or, in the case of one particularly analytical Browns fan, it’s about ranking losses. All 178 of them since 1999.

Seriously. Some sad Browns fan ranked every loss the team has suffered over the last 16 seasons.

You can check out the rankings by clicking here. I don’t know who the guy is, but to give you an idea how incredibly depressing his list is, this loss from 2001 is only the fourth worst:

Oh, Browns.
