ole miss fan assaulted by police

A police officer assaulted an uncooperative fan at the Ole Miss-LSU game in Oxford on Saturday. Of that we are absolutely certain.

The fan, whose name is Chris Barnes, has a fractured orbital wall, a fractured maxillary sinus, and a concussion. And most importantly, this is what he looked like at the emergency room on Saturday night:

What is less certain is why a police officer punched Barnes in the face. According to a Facebook post by his wife, Holly Barnes, the police blamed Barnes and his friends for something that happened a few rows back, and then they just punched her totally innocent husband out of the blue:

My husband, a two time Veteran of the US Army National Guard, was wrongfully assaulted on campus during the Ole Miss vs LSU game by a POLICE OFFICER. He was hit twice in the face and then arrested. THEY DID NOT GIVE HIM MEDICAL ATTENTION. Four hours later once he posted bail, he asked his friends to take him to the ER. He was diagnosed with a concussion, fractures to his orbital wall and maxillary sinus and contusions to the tissues of his eyes. This all stemmed because the officers thought he did something that someone a few rows up did and blamed him and his friends. I’m disappointed in the University police department and the Oxford police department for letting this happen. YOU ARE NOT ABOVE THE LAW. THIS IS NOT OK. Please help us get justice by calling out this police officer! I want his NAME AND BADGE! Please help me get this to the media by sharing. Thank you. Pictures posted in comments.

However, according to WLBT News, a person claiming to have witnessed the incident says Barnes was drunk and belligerent, and that he refused to be restrained. And this version of the story is corroborated by the video Holly Barnes posted on Facebook, which clearly shows her husband giving the police officers an earful (with a smirk on his face) and resisting their efforts to remove him from the stands:

The University of Mississippi Police Department issued an official statement about this incident on their Facebook page on Sunday morning:

At this point we still don’t know the name of the officer who punched Barnes in the face. However, he’ll surely be identified and disciplined soon. While a certain amount of force was probably called for, given the resistance Barnes was putting up, punching him in the face was way over the line and highly unprofessional.
