Donald Trump: Football Has Become Soft, Just Like America (Video)
Donald Trump has targeted everyone from Muslims and Mexicans to Ted Cruz and Fox News host Megyn Kelly during his surreal and improbably successful presidential campaign. Now he’s put the NFL on blast.
At a campaign event in Reno on Sunday night, while American sports fans were transfixed by the excitement of playoff football, Trump used the NFL as an analogy for what’s wrong with America. Citing the sensational ending to Saturday’s Bengals-Steelers game and the controversial Vontaze Burfict headshot on Antonio Brown, the real estate mogul-turned-reality TV star-turned-Presidential candidate said “football has become soft like our country has become soft.”
“You used to see these tackles, and it was incredible to watch,” Trump said. “Now they tackle, ‘Oh, head-on-head collision, 15 yard!’ The whole game is all screwed up. You say, ‘Wow, what a tackle.’ Bing. Flag.”
Take a look:
Of course, football has become “soft” because we now understand that repeated blows to the head causes permanent brain damage that can result in memory loss, confusion, depression, aggression, and premature death. (Cf. Seau, Junior.) And many of Trump’s opponents would argue that America’s tolerance for things it didn’t used to tolerate (such as illegal immigration and gay marriage) is the result of a similar awakening to the complexities of the world.
But of course, Trump understands his base. And even if you don’t accept the basic premise of the man’s campaign, you have to admit his NFL analogy was pretty brilliant. Kind of like you have to admit that, in his own way, Kim Jong Un is also pretty brilliant.
