Ed Reed Joins Rex Ryan’s Coaching Staff in Buffalo
Exciting week for Buffalo Bills fans who like defense-first football. First Rex Ryan added his twin brother Rob Ryan to his coaching staff. Now he’s added former NFL safety and future Hall of Famer Ed Reed.
Reed, 37, spent 11 seasons with the Ravens before splitting one final season in the NFL between the Texans and Jets. During that time Reed was a nine-time Pro Bowler, five-time All-Pro, and a Super Bowl champion. He is one of only three safeties in the past 30 years to be named Defensive Player of the Year, and is currently sixth all-time in interceptions and first in interception return yards.
Oh, and Bill Belichick once said that Ed Reed was the smartest player he has ever faced as a coach.
With a resume like that, Reed would be an asset to any team. However, he and Rex Ryan have a history together. Ryan coached Reed in Baltimore, first as the Ravens’ defensive line coach and later as their defensive coordinator, then he coached him again in 2013 as head coach of the Jets.
In Buffalo, Reed will serve as the assistant defensive backs coach. However, if he is as smart as anyone says he is, this will only be the start of his coaching journey.
Things are looking up, Buffalo.
