Cam Newton Wore Cleats with Teammates’ Names on Them During NFC Championship Pregame Warmup (Pics)
This season Cam Newton threw for 35 touchdowns and just 10 interceptions while leading his team to a 15-1 record in the regular season. However, people still found reason to complain about him.
Unfortunately, this is nothing new for Newton. People were calling his character into question before the kid was even drafted. Just take a look at this scathing critique by Nolan Nawrocki in the 2011 Pro Football Weekly draft preview:
“Very disingenuous—has a fake smile, comes off as very scripted and has a selfish, me-first makeup. Always knows where the cameras are and plays to them. Has an enormous ego with a sense of entitlement that continually invites trouble and makes him believe he is above the law—does not command respect from teammates and will always struggle to win a locker room… Lacks accountability, focus and trustworthiness—is not punctual, seeks shortcuts and sets a bad example. Immature and has had issues with authority. Not dependable.”
The part questioning Cam’s maturity might have had some truth to it. But what 21-year-old doesn’t have some maturing to do?
As for the part about how Newton “will always struggle to win the locker room,” in hindsight that’s just downright laughable. By all accounts, Newton’s Panthers teammates love him. How can you not love a guy who does stuff like this:

That’s right. Cam Newton wore specially designed cleats with the names of his teammates on them while warming up for the NFC Championship Game. And apparently the Panthers didn’t find the show of affection to be “disengenuous,” because they went on to thrash the Cardinals 49-15.
I guess Cam Newton is a winner after all.
