david blatt almost blew it for cavs

As you probably know, the Cleveland Cavaliers fired head coach David Blatt on Friday. But somehow the move felt shocking and expected at the same time.

On the one hand, Blatt never really seemed like he was in charge. He made some major gaffe’s during the Cavs’ run to the Finals last year, and his team had just suffered a humiliating beatdown at the hands of the Golden State Warriors. Seeing as how anything short of a championship will be considered a total failure for this team, Friday was as good a time as any to make a coaching change.

On the other hand, the Cavs were 30-11 this season and 83-40 overall under David Blatt. No team in NBA history had ever fired a coach with that high a winning percentage. The Cavs have command of the Eastern Conference, and there’s plenty of time to iron out the kinks (i.e. teach Kevin Love how to play defense) before the playoffs start. Moreover, the Cavs players (i.e. LeBron) never gave Blatt the respect and deference he deserved simply by virtue of being the head coach. So from that angle, making a coaching change seems kind of crazy.

But make a change they did. And you really couldn’t have blamed David Blatt if he just wanted to stay in his pajamas all weekend and mope around the house drinking whiskey straight from the bottle.

That’s not what David Blatt did, though. In fact, he did the opposite.

On Sunday, Blatt was spotted out and about, looking very much as though he was enjoying his time off:

Apparently he even treated himself to a 7,000-calorie lunch at the Cheesecake factory:

Of course, when you really think about it, this reaction makes total sense. Unless Steph Curry gets injured, there is absolutely no way the Cavs beat the Warriors in the Finals. But Blatt was going to have to bust his balls and take the blame. Now he still gets to collect $20 million from the Cavs. But because he got fired, no one can blame him when the Cavs don’t win a championship.

Wouldn’t you feel relieved?
