High School Hockey Player Scores OT Winner on Same Day His Father Died (Video)
Doug Caliendo probably wasn’t expected to play in Notre Dame’s (West Haven, Connecticut) game against Northwest Catholic (West Hartford, Connecticut) High School on Wednesday, after his father passed earlier that day from colon cancer. But Caliendo was out there on the ice anyways, because he knew that’s what his father would have wanted.
“Knowing my father for so long, he really loved the sport and always wanted me to play,” Doug said. “He would have said, ‘Just get out there and do what I do best.’”
And in this case, Caliendo’s “best” was a game-winning goal in overtime, as the heavy-hearted defenseman broke the 2-2 deadlock when he stepped into a clapper from the point.
To no one’s surprise, Caliendo’s teammates and the Notre Dame crown went absolutely wild. A couple of the overjoyed fans even made it onto the ice to celebrate with their hero:
You couldn’t have written a better ending to this story.
Incredible stuff, Doug. Your father would be proud.
